U.S. Employment Visa Pathways For Engineering Professionals from Canada

As a Canadian citizen, you have access to a visa type that citizens of many countries do not. The TN is significantly more competitive than it has been in the past, as students from very few countries are currently afforded viable paths to work visas within the U.S.

YOUR VISA PATHWAY
What is the TN?
The TN is a work classification under the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA). For Canadian citizens, it is the fastest path to U.S. professional employment in the immigration system. There is no lottery, no USCIS petition, and no annual cap. You present your qualifications and job offer letter at a U.S. port of entry, and TN status can be granted the same day.
Who qualifies?
Canadian citizens with qualifications for a USMCA-listed profession. Engineers, computer systems analysts, and management consultants are all covered, making Engineering Management graduates eligible under multiple classifications.
Annual cap: None. TN is uncapped for Canadian nationals.
Renewal: Three-year increments, renewable indefinitely.
Typical processing: Apply at a U.S. port of entry or preclearance airport (Pearson, Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, etc.). Present your degree, TN offer letter, and proof of citizenship. In most cases, TN status is granted the same day.
How the transition works
You study at UT Austin on an F-1 student visa. CPT provides authorized work experience during the program. After graduation, OPT (up to 36 months for STEM degrees) bridges the period until you have a qualifying job offer. Many Canadian graduates find the TN transition so fast that the OPT bridge is brief. Once you have a job offer, you can apply at the border and begin work almost immediately.
The TN classification is a treaty obligation under USMCA. It has been in continuous effect since 1994 under NAFTA and its successor.

It is a Master's in Engineering Management with curriculum aligned to the American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM) Body of Knowledge. You can start remotely and transition to in-person once you’ve secured your F-1 visa.
- Tuition that respects the investment. At approximately 25,000 USD per year, TxEEE is cost-competitive with programs that offer far less support and priced well below peer institutions that don't provide the visa-aware career infrastructure described above.

Just as with other U.S.-based programs, you are responsible for:
- Obtaining your student visa
- Retaining and consulting your own qualified immigration attorney
- Maintaining valid visa status throughout your studies
- Meeting all application deadlines, filing requirements, and legal obligations related to your visa transition
- Securing your own job offer, though we actively help connect you with employers
