U.S. Employment Visa Pathways For Engineering Professionals from Australia

As a Australian citizen, you have access to a visa type that citizens of many countries do not. The E-3 is significantly more competitive than it has been in the past, as students from very few countries are currently afforded viable paths to work visas within the U.S.

YOUR VISA PATHWAY
What is the E-3?
The E-3 is a work visa available exclusively to Australian citizens, created under the U.S.–Australia Free Trade Agreement. Unlike the H-1B, there is no lottery and no USCIS petition. Your employer files a Labor Condition Application, and you apply directly at a U.S. consulate in Australia.
Who qualifies?
Australian citizens with at least a bachelor's degree and a U.S. job offer in a specialty occupation, which includes engineering management.
Annual cap: 10,500 per year10,500 per year. Historically undersubscribed. Most years, fewer than half of available slots are used.
Renewal: Two-year increments, renewable indefinitely.
Typical processing: Consular interview in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth. Most applicants receive a decision at the interview. Estimated timeline from job offer to visa in hand: approximately 3–6 weeks.
How the transition works
You study at UT Austin on an F-1 student visa. During the program, Curricular Practical Training (CPT) allows authorized U.S. work experience. After graduation, Optional Practical Training (OPT) provides up to 12 months of work authorization, extended to 36 months for STEM degree holders, while your employer prepares the E-3 application. Because the E-3 processes at the consular level with no lottery, the transition is faster and more predictable than the H-1B route.The TN classification is a treaty obligation under USMCA. It has been in continuous effect since 1994 under NAFTA and its successor.
The E-3 is a bilateral treaty obligation, not an executive policy. It has been in effect since 2005.

It is a Master's in Engineering Management with curriculum aligned to the American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM) Body of Knowledge. You can start remotely and transition to in-person once you’ve secured your F-1 visa.
- Tuition that respects the investment. At approximately 25,000 USD per year, TxEEE is cost-competitive with programs that offer far less support and priced well below peer institutions that don't provide the visa-aware career infrastructure described above.

- Maintaining valid visa status throughout your studies
- Meeting all application deadlines, filing requirements, and legal obligations related to your visa transition
